Dr. John W White is Professor Emeritus of Pennsylvania State University
in Horticulture and Distinguished Alumnus of Oklahoma State University.
John is Vice President and Program John has deep roots in
LaPlata County. His mother’s Estes ancestors, founders of Estes Park,
Co. settled in LaPlata County in the late 1800’s
as ranchers and miners He fell in love with the Durango area as a teenager
in the 1940’s, bought property here in 1976 and retired to Durango
in 1992. John has used photography professionally in 20 books, and over
180 technical and popular articles. His horticultural lectures and talks
always include his photographs. Mark Levey’s book “The Art of
Autofocus The photographs come from Johns extensive travels to South Africa, Patagonia, the Alps, the South Pacific and Caribbean Islands, Canada, Alaska New Zealand, Australia and our own San Juan Mountains. His subjects follow his natural interests- Flowers, Landscapes, Foliage as well as abstracts and kaleidoscopes. John transitioned from film to digital photography four years ago and became interested in Giclee printing more recently. He begins with an original photograph and then uses the computer to produce a unique impressionistic image that is printed on fine art canvas using archival pigmented inks.
